She Shapes History is a feminist social enterprise making women's history accessible, engaging and relevant.
From Melbourne's trams to the design of Canberra to the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, this country has been shaped by women whose names most people were just never told. That gap sits at the heart of gender inequality, and we're here to close it.
We run walking tours across four cities, make digital content, and partner with cultural institutions, historic sites and councils to help people see the women who shaped Australia.
We're recruiting in three cities this round. You'd be trained on the tour that runs in yours:
- Sydney → Badass Women of Sydney
- Wollongong → Wicked Women of Wollongong
- Melbourne → Badass Women of Melbourne
Each is a two-hour walking tour for groups of up to 18 guests.
If you've never been on one, we highly recommend coming along before you apply. It's truly the fastest way to work out whether this is the job for you, and in our experience, the best applications come from people who have previously been on a tour.
What's involved:
You'll lead groups through your city, bringing women's history to life through clear, engaging, inclusive storytelling. It's so more than reciting a script. You'll read the group, handle questions, create connection and help people see familiar streets differently. You'll also do the practical work that makes a tour run well: preparation, safety checks, guest communication and post-tour reporting.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead public tours at least once a fortnight, mostly weekends but also during the week
- Welcome every group so guests from all sorts of backgrounds feel included
- Tell accurate, engaging stories while adapting to the group in front of you
- Manage timing, route logistics and basic safety requirements
- Answer questions thoughtfully, and know when to follow up or escalate
- Complete pre-tour and post-tour checks
- Take part in paid onboarding, training, shadow tours and supported tours
- Act on feedback, and keep your availability up to date
What we offer
- $50 an hour (+ 12% super)

- Paid training and actual support. Very comprehensive tour notes, paid time to learn the content, practical walkthroughs and supported tours until you're ready to fly solo. You won't be handed a script and left to it.
- A community you’ve never otherwise be part of. Some of the most interesting, history-shaping humans you'd probably never have or really got to know otherwise.
- Our guests. People who book a women's history walking tour on a Saturday morning are, reliably, the best kind of people.
- Room to grow. Both of our Operations Coordinators started as guides. Others have helped develop tours, shape research and build our training. We're expanding the tours we run and the cities we run them in, and we always recruit internally before going external.
Key criteria:
You don't need previous guiding experience. What matters is that you're curious, kind, reliable and able to hold a group's attention in a way that feels like you. Here's what we're looking for:
✅ You can guide at least one tour a fortnight, including weekends, and have some mid-week availability for private and partnership tours
✅ You're the kind of person who notices someone standing alone at a party and goes over to say hi
✅ You LOVE your city and already feel like one of its unofficial ambassadors
✅ You're curious, engaged and shaping history in your own way. You've got interests, experiences and stories that make your perspective yours
✅ You've got a great memory, learn quickly, can think on your feet, and are comfortable with a bit of improv
✅ You're thoughtful about access and happy to adapt how you guide (pace, tone, route, energy) so everyone feels included
✅ You treat guiding as professional work. You're organised, you prepare properly, you communicate early, and you get the unglamorous bits done
✅ You like getting better at what you do. Feedback makes you curious rather than defensive, and you turn up with solutions
