Why you might love this opp:

Effective Altruism Australia (EAA) exists to support Australians in tackling the world’s most pressing problems. We do this by supporting Australians to donate to alleviate global poverty and tackle climate change, as well as supporting the Australian effective altruism community more broadly.

Our Community Team runs programs that help people learn about effective altruism, connect with others, and take meaningful action - whether that's changing careers, donating effectively, or starting local groups. We run the annual EAGxAustralasia conference, introductory fellowships, a community retreat, and provide ongoing support to local group organisers across Australia and New Zealand.

What's involved:

We're looking for a Community Programs Manager to help us grow and support the effective altruism community in Australia. You'll work closely with the Head of Community Programs (Bridget Loughhead) to design, deliver, and improve programs that help Australians have a greater positive impact with their careers, donations, and time.

This role is dynamic. You'll run fellowships and events, support local group organisers, contribute to the annual EAGx Australia conference, and help engaged community members figure out their next steps. Some weeks you'll be deep in logistics; others you'll be coaching a group organiser or facilitating a discussion on AI safety. The common thread is helping people in the EA community do more good.

We're open to candidates at different levels of experience. A strong junior candidate would take on program execution with guidance, while a more senior candidate would bring independent strategic thinking and mentorship capacity. Either way, you'll have real ownership over meaningful work from day one.

Key criteria:

We expect strong candidates will meet many (but not all) of the criteria below. We encourage you to apply even if you don't tick every box—we've hired great people before by focusing on potential and providing training where needed.

Required

  • You can get things done. You're organised, reliable, and able to manage multiple projects without dropping balls. You've demonstrated this in previous work, volunteering, or study.
  • You're familiar with effective altruism. You understand the core ideas well enough to facilitate a discussion or answer questions from newcomers. You have some familiarity with the EA ecosystem - key organisations, cause areas, and how the community is structured.
  • You work well independently and collaboratively. You can self-direct when needed, but also communicate proactively and take feedback well. You're comfortable in a small, remote team.
  • You're a clear communicator. Whether it's an email to a group organiser, a presentation to students, or a Slack message to a colleague, you write and speak clearly.
