A guide to tech for non-techies.

Vincent Zhang

Vincent Zhang is the senior policy advisor at Tech Council of Australia and the founder and CEO of tech non-profit Tech4SocialGood, and this legend has been dropping some serious knowledge bombs and bursts of inspo on our community portal! Vincent is a firm believer that tech can be a space for everyone.

Getting into tech can often feel overwhelming especially if you don’t have a computer science degree or the technical skills. But it does not have to be – first of all there are so many non-coding roles in tech. Watch my spiel on it here! I hope this helps you.

Step 1: Discover your passion!

Identify what excites you about technology – whether it’s creating innovative solutions, exploring cutting-edge applications, or simply unravelling complex problems. This passion will serve as your driving force, pushing you to delve deeper into the world of tech.

Step 2: Amplify solutions leveraging tech.

Once you’ve found your passion, explore how technology can amplify or solve significant problems. Whether it’s in your personal life, a professional setting, or a broader societal issue, technology has the potential to make a difference. Understand the key drivers of these problems and explore how technology can be harnessed to address them effectively.

Use the ‘Tech and Startups’ filter on our opportunities search tool, and look out for hackathons, programs and accelerators to access free and sponsored programs to help you build these skills.

Step 3: Learning to code has never been easier.

Often, tech is perceived to be difficult to get into due to a high technical skill barrier. However, AI-driven learning platforms have made coding more accessible than ever. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT can make your learning journey easier and more streamlined!

Step 4: Python is your secret tool.

Python is the go-to programming language for many beginners. Its versatility, simplicity, and vast community support make it an ideal starting point for your tech exploration. It is in English which makes it very easy for previously non-coding pals to learn!

Step 5: Showcase your problem solving skills.

Coding is more than just a language; it’s a powerful problem-solving tool. Showcase your tech skills by identifying inefficiencies or areas of improvement in your job and developing solutions to streamline processes. Whether it’s automating file management or creating innovative systems, these projects demonstrate your competence and dedication.

Outside of work, embark on personal coding projects that align with your passions and interests. Remember, even small projects can have a big impact. If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, Chat GPT can help you ideate and ignite your creative spark.

Step 6: Broaden your horizons!

Exploring tech beyond borders can be an eye-opening experience. Consider working, studying, or attending conferences overseas to gain exposure to different innovation landscapes. Innovation is regionally dependent, and immersing yourself in diverse tech cultures can provide fresh perspectives and inspiration. China, for instance, has been at the forefront of innovative technology solutions. The dynamism of their tech industry presents exciting opportunities for tech enthusiasts seeking to make a global impact.
