Volunteer WhyNot Editors
WhyNot
Want to develop and contribute your editing, writing or storytelling skills while helping young people share their ideas and experiences?
Why us?
The opportunity:
Why you might love this opp:
WhyNot is a platform that creates space for young people to share their ideas, experiences and perspectives in their own words. We publish stories and creative work from young people across Australia and around the world, commission new work through our Newsroom and create opportunities for young voices to reach wider audiences.
WhyNot is powered by the Y in Australia and supported by a volunteer team currently based across Australia.
At the heart of the platform is a belief that contributors should be able to tell their stories in their own voice. The role of an editor is not to turn a submission into something we would have written. It is to help the contributor make their own work clearer, stronger and ready to share.
WhyNot Editors help shape, strengthen and prepare submissions from young people for publication, while protecting the contributor’s individual voice and ownership of their story. The role operates through a hybrid editing model.
Editors can work independently and flexibly during the week, while also being invited to collaborative Editing Hangs during our quarterly Editing Sprints. Editing Hangs are a chance to work alongside other Editors, ask questions, get a second opinion and access real-time support from WhyNot’s Co-Head Editors.
Attendance isn’t compulsory, but we highly encourage Editors to join where they can because the collaborative nature of the Sprints is an important part of the WhyNot editing experience. You’ll receive a manageable allocation of contributor submissions to work through, with support from the Co-Head Editors and Platform Operations team.
This is a flexible volunteer role, with Editors contributing up to approximately five hours per week during active editing periods. Editing can be completed independently at times that work around your work, study and other commitments.
