Why you might love this opp:

WhyNot is a platform that creates space for young people to share their ideas, experiences and perspectives in their own words. We publish stories and creative work from young people across Australia and around the world, commission new work through our Newsroom and create opportunities for young voices to reach wider audiences.

WhyNot is powered by the Y in Australia and supported by a volunteer team currently based across Australia.

Behind every published story is a lot of moving parts. Submissions need to be tracked, contributors need to know what is happening, consent needs to be managed, payments need to move and content needs to progress through the right stages.

The Head of Platform Operations helps make sure all of that happens. The Head of Platform Operations is a member of the WhyNot Core Team and helps keep the platform organised, responsive and running smoothly.

You will own the operational systems that support contributors, volunteers and the WhyNot Core Team. This includes managing the submission pipeline, contributor communications, payments, consent and records, operational workflows and the administration that supports WhyNot's quarterly Editing Sprints.

This isn't simply an admin role. It is about designing and maintaining systems that create a good experience for contributors and make it easier for the rest of the WhyNot team to do their work.

You will work as a peer alongside the Head of Publishing & Platform within the Operations & Publishing function. Core Team positions are ongoing volunteer roles.

The exact time commitment varies between roles and throughout the year, but most Core Team members should expect to contribute approximately 3–5 hours per week on average.

We understand that volunteers have work, study, family and other commitments, and we aim to create a flexible environment built around clear communication and shared expectations.

The WhyNot Core Team currently meets on Thursdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm (AEST/AEDT). Core Team members are expected to attend regularly where possible, although we understand there may occasionally be conflicts.
