Purpose / Objective:

Provision of academic English tuition to clients seeking to prepare for tertiary and other further studies.

Reports to:

Employment Coordinator - Language and Education

Commitment Period:

Minimum 6 month commitment

Days and hours required per week:

Based on availability of clients, to be scheduled with the tutor. Up to 3 hours a week plus quarterly team training.

Location:

The volunteer must be willing to do a combination of remote and face to face at our ASC Office in Newtown.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance from a people-centered and strengths-based perspective that builds client confidence and skills as independent adult learners.
  • Provide 1:1 tuition to support clients preparing for academic English language testing required by tertiary or other bodies (e.g. PTE and IELTS).
  • Offer tuition in all key areas of macro skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, to support clients’ preparation for language testing and further study.
  • Set practice activities for clients and provide feedback on the accuracy of clients' work.
  • Identify changes needed to increase their English language usage.
  • Work in collaboration with ASC staff and volunteers to achieve the best outcome for clients and report any teaching or personal issues to the Employment Coordinator.
  • Make referrals to other services for client’s continued language development.
  • Participate in team meetings, information and any training sessions as required.
  • Maintain accurate activity reports on CiviCRM with client updates, content covered and material used.
  • Regularly check ASC emails to stay up to date with Centre news and process updates.
Key criteria:
  • Qualification in teaching English as a Second Language.
  • Experience in teaching academic English.
  • Demonstrated capacity to adapt or develop resources/ activities to help students learn at their own pace.
  • Experience and capacity to provide tuition online through Zoom/Google Meet.
  • Experience in academic English testing is desirable but not required.
  • Experience in working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep up to date record keeping.
  • Handle confidential information in accordance to the Privacy Act 1988
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on extra tasks as appropriate.
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, trauma-informed practice.
  • Ability to adhere to policies concerning code of conduct, boundaries and confidentiality.
